CUREO® for the use of motor and cognitive VR therapy

CUREO® software is a stand-alone software for movement therapy in the context of musculoskeletal and neurological therapy, with positive neuroregulative effects in terms of therapy compliance and stress management, for example by reducing anxiety, depression and pain. The aim of this Virtual Reality (VR) / Mixed Reality (XR) therapy is to train cognitive-sensory and movement skills in order to positively influence the range of motion and precision of movements of the upper extremities, as well as to promote trunk stability. In addition, the fine motor skills of the hands can be practised and the temporal execution of movements can be addressed.

The therapy also aims to improve movement coordination and proprioception. Colour and object (re)recognition, spatial orientation and the execution of sequential planning are trained, as well as an increase in the ability to concentrate. Another aspect is relaxation training, positive neuroregulation and mood enhancement, as well as general reduction of anxiety and pain.

CUREO® software is based on immersion in a virtual reality. For this purpose, an XR-based training device such as a VR headset with optical hand recognition and head tracking is used, so that simulations as well as visual and acoustic feedbacks of an executed movement in a virtual reality are possible.

The therapy supports

  • Rehabilitation of the upper extremities, for example in the case of injuries to the central and peripheral nervous system as well as musculoskeletal movement disorders

  • Cognitive rehabilitation, for example, in the case of disorders of attention, spatial perception and neglect

  • Stress management, for example after post-operative or post-traumatic situations, through neuroregulation, including breathing training, colour therapy and multisensory input

Relative contraindications

CUREO® software can be used in acute, early, in-patient and out-patient therapy or rehabilitation. The "remote" function enables therapy at a distance and without contact by therapists at home, or in a care facility under the condition that the patient is supervised by an appropriately trained carer or assistant.

  • Fracture tendency or existing fractures in e.g. severe osteoporosis or osteomalacia, neoplastic, pathological or traumatic genesis

  • Uncontrollable vital functions in the case of e.g. lung and/or cardiovascular diseases (instability, medication or instrumental support for these functions)

  • Co-morbidity in the sense of physical and/or mental limitations, relevant medication or other treatments

  • Epilepsy

  • Patients with severe limitation or loss of orientation in time, space and person (own identity) as well as context (social and situational)

  • Poorly controlled/manageable (neuro-)psychological disease patterns such as anxiety and panic disorders, psychoses, schizophrenia

  • Acute exacerbation of neurodegenerative or inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system (e.g. Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease)

  • Non-correctable severe visual impairments that severely interfere with the use of a VR headset

  • Inability to wear a VR headset

  • Intravenous line in the upper extremities with running infusion

  • Children under 12

Absolute contraindications

Therapy with CUREO® software should be stopped (or not started) immediately if a potentially dangerous situation arises due to the following risk factors:

  • Open skin injury, or other damage and injuries in the relevant areas of the upper extremities and the head (e.g. trepanations and condition after  removal of parts of the skullcap).

  • Shoulder joint (sub)luxation or intolerable pain in the shoulder joint

  • Severe spasticity

  • Severe spontaneous movements e.g. ataxia, dyskinesia, myoclonic jerks

  • Severely confused, non-cooperative and non-manageable patients

  • Severe cognitive deficits

  • Uncontrollable epilepsy and seizures

  • Non-correctable severe visual impairments that disqualify the use of a VR headset (e.g. complete blindness)

  • Forms of aphasia that limit language comprehension to such an extent that verbal instructions are not possible

  • Pronounced hypacusis or the lack of the necessary aids to compensate for it

  • Non-controllable vestibular disease

  • Acute migraine attack

  • Children under 6

  • Lack of adaptability to head size

  • Lack of/insufficient strength in the neck muscles to wear the VR headset
